This East Midlands derby normally doesn’t need any extra hype, but Saturday’s regular-season closer at Welford Road does come with an added twist. Leicester’s points total of 64 currently leaves them in third spot with the weekend to come, but, with Saracens on 63 facing the miserable London Welsh and Exeter also on 63 and at home to Sale, somebody has to miss out on the final places in the top four (Northampton and Bath have both secured home semi-finals). If they can win then Leicester should be home and dry, although their lowly points difference is a note of concern. There are other questions too – with first place wrapped up, what kind of team will Northampton send to face their bitter rivals? Will they rest their top stars? Doing so would keep them fresh for the knockout stages but also gave Leicester an easier path to the play-offs. It’s a match full of intrigue that we can’t wait for.
