Pre-World Cup Test, José Amalfitani Stadium – Buenos Aires
– Springboks seek redemption
– Argentina have an even stronger team than last week
– Balancing act between needs to win and experiment
The under-pressure Springboks travel to Argentina to face a Pumas team bubbling with confidence on Saturday.
For both teams this is the final game before the World Cup kicks off in England next month, which means it’s the last chance for players to impress. It’s also the last chance for coaches to test combinations.
Betting: Argentina v South Africa
Having suffered their first-ever defeat at the hands of the Pumas last week, the South Africans now regard this as a must-win fixture as they hope to regain the faith of their fans. That means there is far less room for experimentation and quotes coming out of the Bok camp suggest minimal changes as the players that failed so dismally in Durban last week are a given a chance to redeem themselves.
Crucially, there’s a southern hemisphere referee on the whistle this time – Glen Jackson – so the Boks may have a better rub of the green at ruck time, so backing South Africa for victory seems reasonable.
Pat Lambie is likely to feature at full-back so some money on the Sharks playmaker getting on the scoresheet should pay off.
Argentina have carefully managed the game time of their star players during the Rugby Championship but are set to name their first-choice XV for the first time this year, including the return of Juan Martin Fernandez Lobbe in the loose trio. Meanwhile, Juan Imhoff will be sure to attract a lot of betting action following his hat-trick last week.
