The 2015 WTA Tour comes to a close as the top ladies in women’s tennis converge on Singapore for a final swansong on the hard courts of the Singapore Indoor Stadium this week.
All the big names are in attendance with the one exception being world number one Serena Williams, who withdrew earlier this month due to injury.
The absence of the 22-time grand slam winner throws the race wide open, with any of the eight ladies capable of beating anyone on their day. Just ask Flavia Pennetta, who overcame almost insurmountable odds to defeat Williams in the US Open final last month.
Pennetta is in the Red Group with five-time grand slam winner Maria Sharapova, world number two Simona Halep and Angnieszka Radwanska.
Sharapova has endured a tumultuous year of injury and has not completed a match since being knocked out semi-finals at Wimbledon.
Halep is arguably the most consistent of the bunch, having secured three titles in 2015 and starred in her second grand slam semi-final at the US Open.
Finally, Radwanska will be looking to continue her form in Asia, where she has won two titles this year.
In the White Group, world number three Garbine Muguruza leads the way, while two-time Grand Slam winner Petra Kvitova will surely prove to be tough opponent.
The Czech’s 35-13 win/loss record for 2015 does not do her class justice, as her 17 career titles attest to.
Angelique Kerber has impressed with four WTA titles in 2015 but her match temperament could be called into question, as she has failed to deliver on the big stage since becoming a top five player in 2012.
Despite being world number three, Muguruza and Lucie Safarova can be seen as the dark horses of the group given their lack of titles of late.
